About me
Since first publishing his cartoons in 1967 - the iconic “Summer of Love” - Louis Hellman has established himself as one of the most distinctive and enduring voices in the world of architecture. For six decades, his witty, insightful and often satirical drawings have chronicled the worlds of architecture, planning and design, capturing both the personalities and the ideas that have shaped the built environment. His work first appeared in leading professional publications such as the Architects’ Journal, The Architectural Review and Building Design, before reaching a wider audience through national newspapers and magazines.
Born and raised in Islington, London, Hellman studied architecture at The Bartlett - University College London (UCL) and later at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Trained as an architect but celebrated as a cartoonist, he developed a unique ability to combine sharp observation, architectural knowledge and humour, creating a body of work that has become an important visual record of architecture within the wider society and culture.
Throughout his career, Hellman’s cartoons and drawings have been exhibited at major venues in the UK and internationally, including Barcelona, Sir John Soane’s Museum, the Royal Academy, the NEC Birmingham, the Architectural Association and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). His exhibitions have introduced audiences to a distinctive perspective on architecture - one that is both affectionate and critical, revealing the human stories behind buildings and the people who design them.
In addition to his work as an illustrator and author, Hellman has been a respected lecturer, speaking extensively across the United Kingdom, Australia and the United States. His accolades extend beyond the arts and architecture; he was awarded an MBE by the Queen for services to the design of environments and products for disabled people, recognising his commitment to accessibility and inclusive design. He has also been honoured with an Honorary Doctorate from Oxford Brookes University in recognition of his outstanding contribution to architecture and visual communication.
Louis Hellman is the author of five books exploring architecture through cartoons and illustration. His work continues to entertain, inform and inspire, offering a unique lens through which to view the architectural profession and the changing world around it. Today, he is widely regarded as one of the most influential architectural cartoonists of his generation, combining humour, insight and artistic skill to illuminate the culture of architecture and building design for professionals and the public alike.
